Emergency plumbing
Emergency plumbing is the work that cannot wait without damage compounding: a burst pipe still flowing, a sewer backing up into the house, a gas concern, or no water at all to the home. Everything else, a slow drain, a dripping faucet, a water heater that can be scheduled, is urgent-feeling but standard-rate work, and the distinction is worth real money because emergency call-outs add a premium of $100 to $300, or 1.5 to 2 times labor, on top of the repair.
The first response is always the same and costs nothing: shut the water off at the fixture valve or the main, contain what has escaped, and make the scene safe. For gas, that means leaving the house and calling the utility or 911 from outside. With the water stopped, most emergencies become a controlled repair that can be quoted properly instead of a blank cheque signed at midnight.
What a complete emergency plumbing job includes
- Shut-off and containment guidance before the visit
- Diagnosis of the failure point, stated before repair pricing
- The repair itself, priced as a repair, with the emergency premium shown separately
- Testing of the repaired line or fixture before the visit closes
- A written record of what failed and what was done
Cost frame
The repair is priced from the standard ranges in the cost guide (for example an accessible leak repair at $200 to $550); the emergency element is the premium above it. Ask for the two figures separately, tonight's price and the first-appointment-tomorrow price, whenever the water is safely off.

Questions about emergency plumbing
What counts as a plumbing emergency?
Active water flow you cannot stop at a fixture valve, sewage backing up into the home, any gas smell or alarm, and a complete loss of water to the house. Slow drains, drips, and a failed water heater with the supply safely off can usually wait for standard hours.
How do I shut my water off?
Most fixtures have an angle-stop valve at the wall or floor. The house main is usually where the service line enters, at the meter, or in the basement or utility area. Turning the main clockwise (gate valve) or a quarter turn (ball valve lever) stops everything.
Will a member business always reply to an emergency match?
No. Your job is sent only to paying member businesses among your matches; a member may reply directly, and if no paying member matches, no reply may come. In a true emergency, call businesses on your metro board directly as well.
